Mr Richard Toop

Honorary Reader

Richard Toop has spent his entire career in contact with some of Europe’s leading modernist composers (his first job was as Stockhausen’s teaching assistant in Cologne). He is part historian, part analyst of compositions and, above all, compositional processes. His publications include a book on Ligeti, a book of Stockhausen analyses, numerous analytical articles and book chapters, and several contributions to the Grove Dictionary of Music, including the entries on Ferneyhough and Stockhausen. He recently curated new and updated entries on Australian art music for Grove, contributing an entry on Jon Rose. He retired from the Sydney Conservatorium (University of Sydney) in 2010, and is now Honorary Reader in Musicology. His major current project is an extensive study of the sketches for Stockhausen’s Momente.
