Con Opera presents Les Mamelles de Tirésias

Music by Francis Poulenc

Join us to celebrate the next generation of opera singers as we present Francis Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias (The Breasts of Tiresias).

This surrealist opéra bouffe is based on the play of the same title by Guillaume Apollinaire, which was written in 1903 and first performed in 1917.

The opera premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 June 1947. Poulenc’s opera is an absurdist romp through the turbulent relationship of Therese and her husband. Beginning with a feminist revolt in which Therese changes herself to a man and changes her husband into a woman, this gender-bending opera ends with a poignant message of peace to country ravaged by war.

Sung in French, with English surtitles

Musical Director: Dr Stephen Mould
