Presence through sound: Place and contemporary music in and from East Asia DAY ONE

“Place” holds an ongoing significance in many contexts related to East Asian music: from the maintenance of East Asian musical traditions and the recent involvement of East Asian countries in national and international systems of intangible cultural heritage, to the global interest in popular music of the region and the growing profiles of star East Asian performers in many genres.
This two-day symposium brings together experts from Australia, China, Japan, Korea and the UK to explore new ways of understanding how place and music are currently conceptualized, interconnected, expressed, refused and reinterpreted in music from or related to East Asia, and to enable clearer articulation of East Asia’s recent cultural and social transformations as seen from a diverse range of musical perspectives.
The symposium is complemented by a free concert on the evening of Tuesday 29 March that features performances of Chinese, Japanese and Korean-related music given by symposium presenters and SCM staff and graduate students.
