Professor Alexey Sokolov is one of Russia's most regarded pianists. Sokolov has won many international piano competitions, including first prize and a Grand Prix at the Stresa Yamaha Piano Competition in Italy and first prize at the Bach Piano Competition in Russia.

In 1999, he was delegated by the St. Petersburg State Conservatory to teach at the Tianjin State Conservatory of Music, China. Despite his busy schedule, Sokolov has been performing as soloist with many orchestras, including performances in England, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Czech, Yugoslavia, all over the Russia, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Since moving to China, he has held over 100 different concerts and offered master classes in a number of major cities. He also performs with many symphony orchestras, performing in such venues as the City Concert Hall in Newcastle (England), the Grand Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, the Belgrade Philharmonic Hall and the Concert Hall of Prague. Besides his artistic and educating career Sokolov has published several works devoted to different aspects of piano performing – “Interpretation Problems of Schubert's piano sonatas”, “About some aspects of musical form in Beethoven Piano sonatas” and an article devoted to different aspects of piano accompaniment. Some of these have also been published in China.

Sokolov is well known in Russia and in Europe as the founder of the Russian International Piano Competition for Young Pianists. His piano students have won many international piano competitions.
