Out of the Shadows Closing Finale Concert: Vignettes and Masterpieces – Jewish Composers and the String Quartet

Please purchase tickets here

Out of the Shadows is honoured to close the Festival with the Goldner String Quartet, Australia’s premiere chamber music ensemble. Named after Richard Goldner, Viennese Jewish refugee and founder of Musica Viva, the quartet will perform two master compositions: Mendelssohn’s moving A minor quartet and the Australian premiere of Mieczeslaw Weinberg’s extraordinary 8th string quartet. Weinberg has only recently emerged as a prodigious and talented composer, best friend of Shostakovich and himself a Jewish refugee in Soviet Russia. For the vignettes, the Quartet will present the first performance of an excerpt Wilhelm Grosz’s string quartet, lost for 100 years; Ebraica, one of the only secular compositions by the beloved Synagogue composer, Samuel Alman (a witness to the Kishinev pogrom in 1903 and a refugee to the United Kingdom); excerpts from Walter Wurzburger’s second quartet, composed during his studies at Melbourne University, and Hans Krása’s charming and effervescent Theme and Variations, a work which attests to his studies with Albert Roussel and his love of the composers known as Les Six.
