Caring for Ceremony workshops near Litchfield National Park

In August, Professor Linda Barwick and Professor Allan Marett travelled to Rak Makmak Marranunggu country in the Daly region, near Litchfield National Park, to attend a workshop called “Caring for Ceremony” led by long-term collaborator Dr Payi Linda Ford, of Charles Darwin University.

The workshop brought together ceremony leaders from Belyuen (near Darwin) and Warruwi (Goulburn Island) for two days of sharing music and dance with family and friends. Younger generations enjoyed a safe and welcoming environment for learning on country, and the whole group reflected on the importance of ongoing access to archival records of ceremony, such as the six CDs of wangga songs edited by Barwick and Marett with linguist Lysbeth Ford, which will soon be released by Sydney University Press.

All present agreed enthusiastically on the value of the experience and hope it can continue and develop in future years.
